A Hot Summer Day in the Garden

オクラの花 Japanese home garden

It was another hot summer day. During my evening watering routine, I took a slow walk around the garden to see how everything was doing.

Peppers and Edamame

When I checked on the peppers, I noticed that the edamame had grown so vigorously that the peppers were now completely in the shade.
Back in early July, things looked so different—

Now the edamame has even started to invade the okra area.

I wondered if I should cut some of it back, but since both plants still look healthy, I decided to wait a little longer and keep an eye on them.

Marigolds and Eggplants

The marigolds I planted as companion plants for the eggplants are surprisingly more vigorous than the eggplants themselves.

A Frog on Patrol

On top of an okra leaf, I found a small frog quietly watching the blooming edamame flowers.

And when I went to harvest a cucumber, another frog was sitting right on top of it. I wanted to pick it, but… I couldn’t disturb the little guardian.

Frogs are said to eat harmful insects, so I leave them alone and let them do their work.

As I finished watering, I whispered, “Thanks for keeping the garden safe,” and ended my evening rounds.
